The advances being made in our industry at the moment to encourage more environmentally friendly practices are extraordinary and, as with all construction businesses, we are fully committed to doing what we can while trying to keep up with the pace of innovation.
It may seem like small fry when there are significant changes being imposed on the fuel we use in our machinery and the likes of hempcrete or bamboo are being introduced as alternatives to concrete but recently we had a refresh of our marketing collateral. It was a good opportunity to look at how we could reduce the impact on climate change of our printed collateral, which is still a valuable asset for us in spite of the increased reliance on digital communications.
We are now using carbon-balanced paper, which we feel not only helps us to reduce our carbon footprint but adds value to our brand experience in an increasingly environmentally-conscious market.
Carbon Balancing is delivered in partnership with the World Land Trust, an international conservation charity, protecting the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats.
Protecting carbon-rich habitats avoids the release of stored carbon and enables the regeneration of degraded habitats, which gradually re-absorb atmospheric CO2. These same habitats are home to dozens of threatened species, meaning the benefits of choosing Carbon Balanced Paper exceed far beyond carbon offsetting alone.
Since its foundation in 1989, the World Land Trust’s forest protection and restoration projects have had measurable, long-term local community benefits, a positive climate impact and significant biodiversity conservation value. To date, the organisation has helped secure more than 881,000 acres of threatened habitat in 20 countries including Vietnam, Mexico, Ecuador and Guatemala.
“The money that is given to the World Land Trust in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of” Sir David Attenborough
This may seem like a simple step but we all have a responsibility to take positive action and it is great to hear that last year the scheme doubled its production of carbon balanced paper, fuelled by this surge in sustainability efforts by businesses like ours.
