Sir Henry Floyd School
Multiple-use sportshall provides multiple opportunities for school pupils
The challenge
Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire had lost its indoor sports facilities in a fire and the Local Education Authority was unable to fund a replacement despite obtaining planning permission.
The solution
The school became an Academy Grammar School when the opportunity presented itself and regained control of its own budget. The first priority was to build a new multi-use sportshall and CopriSystems won the tender having proposed a scheme using a standard model from its range, adapted to cater for the needs of the project.
Key facts
- Planning restrictions
- 8 sliding panels
- 3m cladding
- Additional changing facilities
- Cushioned polyurethane surface
- Max. footprint 22m x 51.3m
The brief
To design and install a framed fabric structure to accommodate a number of sports including netball, basketball, badminton, football and cricket as well as changing facilities, showers, a gymnasium and staff office. However, the site was restricted to a maximum footprint of 22m x 51.3m and the overall height was limited by planning consideration to 11m. Cladding was also required to minimise the possibility of vandalism.
Project overview
CopriSystems installed a lightweight lattice frame structure with hot-dipped galvanised, rolled-steel sections to give a rounded shape, which reached the maximum height to meet the needs of the different sports. The single cover made from our durable PVC fabric protects pupils playing inside from the hard elements outside but allows plenty of natural light.
Eight sliding panels were incorporated into the cladding to enable a total of 28m of open ventilation at ground level in warmer weather but fans and a high level airsock can increase airflow when required.
Different lighting options were added to suit the range of sports and a cushioned polyurethane surface was chosen complete with playing lines and hanging divider nets. Rebound boards were provided around the perimeter together with fixed and retractable high level basketball frames and hoops.
Rising from the Ashes
Not only has this new facility enabled the school to offer a broad and competitive sports programme to their pupils but they are also able to recoup some of the money invested by opening up the hall to other sports’ clubs and organisations outside school hours and throughout the year.
